For all you perennial gardeners out there, it’s finally time to do your garden clean up for the year! I know, I know, you wanted to do it in the fall, but early to mid spring is really the best time so that all those good critters have a nice nesting and hiding spot to get them through the cold winter months.

Here are all the things you can plant RIGHT NOW:

  • Peas
  • Spring Greens (Spinach, Arugula, Lettuce)
  • Roots (Turnips, Radishes, Beets, Carrots)

If you have any beds you aren’t going to be planting with produce until mid-summer or fall, take this opportunity to put in a little cover crop. We love a good peas and oats mixture for this time of year.

If you haven’t pruned your fruit trees yet, you might want to hold off until a dryer season and when the trees aren’t so busy trying to grow and wake up as they are now. You can consider a post-harvest pruning for any drupe fruits (like peaches, plums, and cherries) or just wait until next winter for your apples and pears. We just found THIS dreamy nursery out in California that sells some gorgeous bare-root fruit trees. We planted a beautiful Orleans Reinette Apple in our orchard this very morning and it made us downright gleeful. Nothing like planting a tree to make you feel all hopeful for the future!
