Join us for a Field Trip to the Farm

Children’s Peace Garden field trips are engaging, hands-on, and will enhance the elementary science curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to engage in activities focused on local food, organic gardening practices, the importance of biodiversity and community, and reconnecting with the Earth through experiential gardening activities. Our curriculum aligns with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Field Trip Topic Descriptions

Food Focused Lessons

Tasting Tour: Students will go on a tour of Growing Gardens and learn about every program and taste fresh plants along the way.
Journey of My Food: Students will follow the journey of food from farm to plate and will have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy, locally grown snack.
Edible Rainbow for Health: Students will have the opportunity to taste the rainbow of fruits and vegetables coming from the garden and learn about how eating a variety of colors can help our bodies be healthy.
No Food Left Behind: Students will learn about different edible parts of the plant and how to reduce food waste in their homes.
Food Detectives: Using all five senses, students will investigate a variety of different fruits and vegetables, learn how they grow, and uncover their nutritional benefits.
Plants and Their Edible Parts: Students will be able to taste fresh produce from our garden as they learn about the different parts of the plant.

Goat Husbandry Lessons

All about Goats: Students will get an overview of the important role our herd plays on the farm beyond making milk. We will learn about basic goat anatomy, the different breeds we have in our herd and why, and get the opportunity to interact with the animals.
Rotational Grazing – How Goats Impact our Soil: Students will learn about the inner workings of goats rotational grazing on the farm.They will look at how rotational grazing works on a small and large scale, what goats need for a day of grazing in their paddock, and its long lasting impact on soil health.

Pollination and Ecosystem Lessons

Insects’ Habitats: Students will learn insect anatomy, what insects’ roles are in the garden environment. Students will then be encouraged to go on an insect investigation..
Vermicomposting: Students will learn about vermicomposting, the life cycle of the worm, and the role of decomposers in an ecosystem.
Honeybees, Pollination and the Food We Eat: Students will learn about the life cycle of the honeybee, pollination, and the honeybees’ contribution to plant life and modern agriculture.
Colorado Soils: Students will be able to experience different types of soils found in Colorado and how those soils affect plant growth.
Water in the Arid West: Students will learn about how Colorado Water Rights impact farming in an arid climate through hands-on activities.
Exploring the Farm Ecosystem: Students will learn about the ecosystem at Growing Gardens and deepen their understanding of food chains and interconnectedness by modeling a life-size food web or exploring food chains in the garden.
Working in the Garden: Students will get their hands dirty and help tend to our Children’s Peace Garden. We will be weeding, seeding, or transplanting, depending on the needs of the garden and the season.

Garden Exploration and Expression

Environmental Art: Students will learn about repeating patterns in nature, the artist work of Andy Goldsworthy, then be encouraged to make their own environmental art from materials found in the places they explore.

Growing Gardens provided engaging and enriching field trips. It was one of the best field trips we had been on. The educators were experienced with kids and classroom management.
