Let’s make moss balls that look like our favorite planet in celebration of Earth Day!

For this project, you need yarn or string (white or blue are great), sphagnum moss or shredded brown leaves, and green living moss. Live moss can often be found in creek or stream beds, near tress and other moist spots.

Begin by placing the moss or shredded leaf material in a bowl of water and letting it soak for a few minutes. Once it looks saturated, grab a handful out of the bowl and squeeze most of the water out of it. Squeeze the moss or leaves tightly together into a ball and wrap the yarn around it. Some leaves or moss will fall out of your fingers but just keep wrapping until it stops falling out and you have a nice earth shaped sphere. This will be the “core” of Earth. Next, add a piece of green moss to the core ball and then wrap the moss onto ball with the (blue) yarn. Make sure to wrap the very edges of the moss too. Once that piece of moss is secure, continue adding moss until your earth is covered in lush green. Secure the yarn by cutting and threading it under the other yarn. Then, you can add another piece of yarn and hang your moss earth in a sunny window. To maintain your earth, just mist it with water or soak every few of days!
