Summary
The Children’s Peace Garden serves children ages 5-10. The goals of this program are that students learn about the source of the food they eat, organic gardening practices, the importance of biodiversity and community, and reconnecting with the Earth. They participate in a number of engaging, hands-on gardening activities that encourage peace, respect, environmental stewardship and friendship. Field trips are available for visiting groups March – Nov. Four options are available for summer camp for children ages 5-10. Please see the summer camp page for more information.
Where?
The Children’s Peace Garden is conveniently located in Boulder near the intersection of Iris and Broadway at 1630 Hawthorn, this organic agriculture site is home to the Children’s Peace Garden, ¡Cultiva! Youth Project, Hawthorn Community Garden, Able Garden and Greenhouse.
Who? Growing Gardens is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating community through gardening. Children’s Peace Garden field trips are led by Growing Gardens staff and interns. The summer camps are led by Growing Gardens staff, interns and ¡Cultiva! Youth project participants who help adult leaders teach the curriculum. These youth work all summer growing produce to sell at the Boulder County Farmer's Market and donate to Community Food Share.

Peace Garden Dates and Times for the 2008 season
Field Trips
The Children’s Peace Garden offers field trips at the garden for groups of elementary aged school children utilizing engaging, hand-on garden activities to enhance existing science and social studies curriculum. Field trips can be scheduled from March – November on our site for visiting school groups (up to 60 children) for up to 3 hours of programming.
Field trip themes include: Community, Planting, Composting, Insects and Pollinator, and Harvesting and Eating
Popular field trip activities include touring the various gardens, planting seeds to take home, meeting our bees, harvesting and tasting from the garden and exploring the worm compost bin.
Field trips are $4 per student, teachers and adult chaperones are no additional charge. Annie will work with your schedule and existing curriculum needs to provide an engaging and educational experience in the garden. Summer Camps for 2008
The children’s Peace Garden offers four day summer camps with four different themes. Summer camp runs Monday – Thursday from 9am-3pm. The 2008 summer schedule is as follows.
June 16-June19 Gardening ABC’s
Whether you’re new to gardening, or have been digging in the dirt all your life, this week has a taste of something for you! We’ll Plant, grow and taste from the salad, strawberry and edible flower garden. Play in the bean pole teepees and grape arbor. Create unique art through hands on gardening activities. Build exciting new relationships with people, plants and insects. Spend four fun-filled days learning in the Children’s Peace Garden.
June 23-June 27 Bugs, Butterflies and Bees
Bugs, Butterflies and Bees – Oh my! Spend four fun-filled days exploring the world of bugs, butterflies and bees in the garden. We’ll build habitats and homes for insects, meet our bees and taste their honey, explore the amazing world of pollination through relay races, unique art projects and interactive gardening games.
July 14-July 17 Art in the Garden
Spend four creative days painting with vegetables, creating natural dyes and making candles from wax from the bee hives. We’ll also write poetry, dance, make musical instruments and sing in the garden. We’ll explore the world of the garden through paints, pencils and photography. No camera required, we’ll make our own!
July 21-July 24 Tasty Treats from the Garden
Enjoy the fruits of the harvest this week! We’ll cook using the power of the sun, explore the five senses through tasting in the garden, harvest food from the ¡Cultiva! Youth Project field, and snack from the salsa, pizza, edible flower and strawberry beds. As we harvest and taste, we’ll create garden recipes to share at home!
Cost
The cost is $190 for each week of the summer day camp.
For every child referred by you that registers for camp you get a $10 discount
Community Gardener rate is $180
Early Bird rate (register by April 15) is $180
