THE GREENHOUSE IS NOW OPEN AND OPERATIONAL!
The
new greenhouse provides year-round horticultural and sustainable energy
education for children, youth and adults. It will create job training,
food production opportunities. In short, this greenhouse allows for the
expansion of all of Growing Gardens programs and broadens the horizon
for future community projects.
The greenhouse is nestled next to the Hawthorn Community Gardens and the
¡Cultiva! 2-acre garden site.
The greenhouse is used to provide education and job skills training to
teenagers involved with the ¡Cultiva! Youth Project. Youth groups
will assist with plant propagation to aid those in need in the community
as service learning projects.
An "Able Gardening" program was developed in 2001 and will be
offered to groups of developmentally and physically disabled adults. The
Center for People with Disabilities partnered with Growing Gardens to
develop this program.
Elementary school groups will assist with cultivating plant starts to
be planted in the Childrens Peace Garden for summer educational
programs. Educational programs are held year-round in the greenhouse for
children to learn about the life cycle of plants, and a variety of other
horticultural topics. Similar classes will be offered to gardeners and
community members. Classes focus on a range of topics including plant
propagation, greenhouse management, and herbs.
