Welcome to the Community Garden Program of Growing Gardens!

New Gardeners

All plots for the 2010 gardening season are full.

New 2011 Wait-List Policy

In the past we have carried over people on wait-lists from year to year. In most cases, when we called people who had signed up a couple years back, their phone numbers were no longer valid, they had moved, never called back or were no longer interested. This was a time consuming process on a short time line.

We hope that our new policy will speed things up. More importantly, we hope that it will get plots in the hands of new and motivated gardeners more quickly and efficiently. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that our new policy may cause you, but we are confident that it will be an improvement.

For the 2011 gardening season, we will be initiating the following Wait List Policy:

Beginning on Monday, January 3rd, 2011, anyone wishing to be placed on the wait-list for the 2011 gardening season will be able to do so by going to our website and following the published instructions. Anyone can sign up to be placed on up to two different garden wait-lists. . If we find that you have signed up for wait-lists on more than two community gardens, you will be immediately disqualified for ANY. Beginning the third week of February, we will contact individuals on the wait-list on a first come first served basis starting with those who signed up on January 3rd, 2011 We will call once and leave a voice mail message if we do not reach you in person. If you do not respond to the voice mail message within 24 hours, we will move on to the next person on the list. We will not contact anyone via email, if your phone number changes after you sign up for the wait-list, it is your responsibility to alert us of that change. By signing up on a wait-list you agree to these terms. Thanks!

BEFORE SIGNING UP FOR A WAIT-LIST, ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Is Community Gardening for me? Please take the time to read this helpful document. Make sure you are willing to commit the necessary time and energy to participate in this program.
  2. Study the map of all our garden locations. Choose your preferred community garden site and decide which size plot is best for you (not all gardens offer the same size plots). Many new gardeners prefer a smaller plot their first year.
  3. Read the rules and regulations for the community garden you choose, as they will be enforced. Then ask yourself, again, is Community Gardening for me?

COMMUNITY GARDEN INFORMATION

BULK COMPOST
Photo Compost is supplied by Growing Gardens at the beginning of each season at Hawthorn, Hickory, Foothills and Kerr gardens for $8 per wheelbarrow.

COMPOSTING
Compost collection carts and dumpsters are located at seven of the community gardens.  Western Disposal picks-up these carts weekly from the community gardens.

Kerr Community Garden collects materials on the concrete pad.  This material is taken by gardeners to a local composting site as needed.

You are also encouraged to compost your plant material on-site at your garden plot.

MANDATORY SPRING ORIENTATIONS
All gardeners are required to attend one of the 2010 spring orientations. Orientations are one hour in length.

THEFT AND PREVENTION
Overall, theft is not a big problem at the community gardens. Occasionally things are lost to hungry visitors passing by or to four footed friends.  We appreciate gardeners watching for looters and informing us when they see produce being stolen.  The city will prosecute those who steal from the gardens.

TOOL SHED AND COMMUNITY TOOLS
Tools are located in the sheds at each garden, with the exception of Goss Grove and Centennial, where the tools are kept in a storage box.  Community tools have brightly painted handles to identify them. The combinations for the locks will be given at orientation or can be obtained by calling the office at (303) 443-9952 x1
.

TRASH
Foothills:
There is a dumpster located in the enclosure at the east end of the parking lot.
Fortune:
There is a dumpster located in the alley on the north side of the garden fence.

There is a small brown dumpster located on the north side of the garden near the greenhouse.
Hickory:
Dumpster is located on site.

WATER
Weather permitting, the water will be turned on as soon as possible in the spring. This will likely happen in February, but can happen in March.  The water will be turned off as necessary when the temperature changes in the fall.  Again, these dates are weather dependant and vary at each garden.

PLOT RENEWALS
2011 renewal applications will go out the end of January 2011. If you maintain your garden and pathways throughout the season, clean it up at the end of the season, fulfill your four hours of community service and have no outstanding money due, you will automatically be sent renewal information.  Please keep your address current with the office so we are able to contact you.  If we don’t hear from you by the renewal deadline, your plot will be made available to others.
